Erasing the Stone Mountain Carving

May 2, 2013

StMtCarvingI don’t know how many of you are aware of the Stone Mountain Georgia State Park, so just encase let me enlighten those who have never heard of it. It is the world’s largest exposed piece of granite and is in the town appropriately called Stone Mountain Georgia. It is over 800 feet tall and over 5 miles wide at its base. It is one huge ball of rock. When it was private land it was used for the rebirth of the KKK. It was later turned into a state park but before that happened a carving was started on its face. The carving was to be a monument of the Confederate Army with her three predominate heroes leading them. Those heroes were Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. The carving was never finished, the three heroes was the only part completed. It is a Confederate Monument, a very big Confederate Monument.

Now that you know what Stone Mountain is and what it is all about, let me tell you why I brought this up. Well there is a movement in Georgia to “uncarve” the mountain. There is one person in particular who is pushing for the removal of the carving. He has created a petition to remove the carving. The petition so far hasn’t gotten too many signatures but the petition isn’t important, it’s the idea that is important. The idea that someone wants to remove a part of our history is important. I agree that the Confederacy was a dark part of our past but it is part of our past and as such we should be reminded of it and what it stood for. It may be painful for some people to think of that time in history but that doesn’t matter, it is history. There is nothing we can do to erase the fact that it happened and trying to erase it from our visual doesn’t help erase the fact that it happened.

If you are going to wipe out elements of our past just because it is painful, then why not erase every negative thing that has ever happened in this world. This is what is called revisionist history and revisionist history is a dangerous thing. It is a fact of nature that humans learn more from the negative elements of the past than they do from the positive elements. The pain reinforces the lesson and makes it an even stronger lesson. History is never a pleasant thing because history is full of painful events.

If you are going to start erasing our heritage just because you don’t like it then why not do something even more responsible like removing the party that pushed for the Civil War. The very party that wanted to keep slavery. The party that fought with the very fiber of their soul to stop the civil rights movement. The very party that is still fighting to take away all your rights.

Why stop at a national monument? Why not go all the way? If the carvings must go then I say the Democrat Party must go also because it was the party behind the Confederacy and it is an affront to American politics. American politics was founded on many concepts such as justice, taxation only with representation, the pursuit of happiness, separation of powers, liberty, freedom, human rights, state’s rights, all men were created equal and inalienable rights. All of these are concepts are what makes America America.

These concepts defined us as a people but these concepts are being erased as fast as Congress can write and pass a bill. Americans need to remember the events and people who brought us to our present. They need to remember all the events and people not just the pleasant ones. The carving needs to stay because we need the reminders. We need the reminders of what the Democrat Party has brought us in the past.
