Gun Rights Verses Property Rights

November 20, 2013

HandsUpForGunControlOur Second Amendment rights are being attacked by the very government that is supposed to protect that right. The progressives are pulling out all the stops to eliminate all means to defend ourselves. They use the guise of trying to protect us from “gun violence” which is a non-existent problem. What we need protection from is violence not “gun violence”. In my 58 years on this earth I have never seen a violent gun but I have seen plenty of violent people.

A gun is nothing more than a tool and it can’t act by itself therefore it cannot be violent. A gun is always at the user’s mercy, just like the unarmed victim is at the mercy of an armed attacker. Violent people are the problem not their tools.  Take away the guns they will find another tool to do the job. If you blame the tool for the user’s actions, then you have to blame their entire toolbox not just the one tool for the user’s actions.

I can take the usual path and give examples of how ridiculous it is to blame the tool but I think everyone has heard those examples a thousand times. Instead I want to talk about how the liberal agenda is permeating our society and corrupting all of us with their idiotic ideology.

Recently Mr. Johnny Jarriel Jr. an employee of the Circle K convenience store chain saved not only his own life but also the lives of his fellow employees and the customers in the store. He did this by pulling his licensed firearm and firing it at an armed robber. He didn’t arbitrarily just pull the gun and start shooting.  He did it after the perpetrator emptied a can of pepper spray in his eyes then put a gun to his head and threatened to kill him and everyone else in the store.

Even though his eye sight was blurred he still managed to get several shots off in the perpetrator’s direction. It was enough to make the robber panic and run out of the store. Thus he put a stop to this criminal’s attempt to terrorize and possible kill others. You would think that would make him a hero.

But what happened was far from what you would expect, that is unless you understand what is happening to our CircleK3guns rights. Mr. Jarriel was fired from his job for saving all those lives that day. The Circle K chain has a company policy that prohibits any of their employees from carrying a gun on the job and they have every legal right to do so. However that makes all their employees sitting ducks for every trigger happy Tom, Dick and Harry who wants to rob them. Convenience stores have to be the number one target for armed robbers and if they can’t defend themselves then they are nothing more than dead meat to anyone who has the inclination to make them that way.

Mr. Jarriel has no legal recourse because even though he has the legal right to bear arms his boss, the property owner also have the right to prohibit him from bringing his weapons on their property.  Therefore an employer has every right to fire any employee just for carrying a weapon on their property.  What really gets my goat is the fact that it was common knowledge that he carried his weapon on the job but the employer never objected to that before. That implies that Mr. Jarriel had implied consent to have his weapon on the property.

So why would the employer object now and not before? That is because they get a benefit from the use of his gun.  They can reap the benefits of not having to pay out in law suits for injured employees and customers plus the store wasn’t robbed.  They also have an out if he accidentally shot someone other than the criminal because he wasn’t supposed to have the gun in the first place. That is what is called having your cake and eating too.  If I was Mr. Jarriet I would sue Circle K on those grounds.

But I’m not however we can help him and others by making a difference, by making the company aware of how we feel about the way they treat their employees and how we feel about our Second Amendment rights. Every business in the world has the same corporate policy and that is to make money. The only way to make companies pay attention to the public’s desires is to hit them in their bottom line. For that reason I will not shop at another Circle K because of their treatment of Mr. Jarriel. I would suggest that all of you do the same and that will make them understand that we will not give up our right to defend ourselves and others just because their corporate policy wants to make us helpless sheep at the mercy of criminals who have no regard for life.

We have to make them aware of the fact that there is a cost associated with stomping on our rights. We also need to make sure that cost is more than the loss associated with banning guns on their property. That is the only way to make a difference in this case and all others like it in the future. So will you join me in telling the Circle K that we won’t lie down and die just because they are too afraid of lawsuits to allow us to practice our Constitutional Rights?
