If Christians Aren’t Supposed to Keep the Law, Can We Go Ahead and Sin?

If Christians aren’t supposed to keep the Law, can we go ahead and sin?

This is a common question. If, as the Bible says, we are not obligated to keep the law in order to be saved, then is it okay to go out and sin?  The answer is no, it is not.  Though we don’t have to keep the law in order to obtain or maintain our salvation (Rom. 3:28; 4:5; Eph. 2:8-9), we look to the law as a moral guide by which we are to behave. In fact, Jesus summarized this when he told us there are two laws we are supposed to obey.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, ”‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39  “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets,” (Matt. 22:36-40).

Even though we are not under the Old Testament law in a strict sense because we have died to the law (Rom.7:6), we are under a New Testament law to love God and love our neighbors. When we do both of these, we will “accidentally” fulfill the law. In other words, to love God means that we will properly show respect, worship, and honor to him.  Likewise, if we love our neighbors as Jesus commands us to, then we won’t lie, or steal, or covet anything of our neighbors’.  So, in that sense we are under the obligation to keep the law; only it’s the law of love.
