I don’t know if any of you have been watching the History Channel’s series on the Bible. I have and all of its hype did have me very excited. I have watched the first two parts and was expecting a very good rendition of some Bible stories. I held my doubts and objections back, but when they told the story Samson that was all I could take.
We have been instructed to neither add to nor subtract from God’s word. I love math so I can see the math and understand the math, but when it comes to math and the Bible we are not allowed to change the equations in any way. That is what these writers have done, they changed God’s equations. I could forget and forgive the subtraction when it doesn’t change the story. However when you subtract then add something all new to the story then you have definitely gone too far. For me, the act that threw the math out the window, was so obviously wrong that I couldn’t believe that they actually did it. The entire Israel nation is one race of people from one family. Their religion frowns on interracial marriages but they did still happen however but it never changed their race when it happened.
At the beginning of the series the nation of Israel was of the fair skin variety, then Samson comes along. Not only was he dark skinned, but very dark skinned and every Israelite around him was the same way. After Samson’s story was over, the Israelite populous was once again only of the fair skinned variety. Why would that be? Was there a dark skinned tribe within the Israelite nation that no one else is aware of? Of course there never was any tribe of dark skinned Israelites, so why would they create one? There are a lot of reasons they may have done it: to be politically correct, to draw in the viewers of the dark skin variety, to get a bigger pay check with a bigger audience or maybe it was just an innocent attempt to bring the story more alive.
Regardless of their reasons, they changed God’s word and that is a form of corruption. You may say well that is just one minor change, what will it hurt. It wouldn’t be too bad if it was the only form of corruption in the series. What would you say if I told you that they gave Delilah credit for God’s work? Well they did just that! In the series after Samson slew the Philistines with the jawbone of an ass he finds Delilah with a jug of water and he orders her to give him a drink. The Bible tells entirely different story. Samson asks God for a drink and God gives him a drink, not Delilah. Delilah isn’t even mentioned until the next chapter of Judges.
18 Then he became very thirsty, and he called to the Lord and said, “You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant, and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” 19 But God split the hollow place that is in Lehi so that water came out of it.
You may say that these are minor innocent changes, but I ask isn’t that where corruption begins? You make little changes here and there and before you know it, the entire story is changed. There is also another reason I object to these changes.
Did you even notice any of these changes in the story while you were watching the program? I’ll bet your answer was no and even if you did I doubt you caught all of them. I’m sure missed many of them. Most people wouldn’t have caught them. I bet if someone asks you later about how Samson and Delilah met you would probably say she gave him some water. It is lot easier to remember what you see than what you read.
Visual stimulation makes a much stronger impression on our minds that text stimulation. Another words, we remember what we see much more easily that what we read. Because of their deviation there will be many people who will have the wrong story embedded in their minds because of this tainted story. Like I said this is just one story and just a small part of the whole story that is corrupted. I could go on and on about the lies within the series but I won’t. You should learn for yourself, after all you won’t necessarily learn or remember just from reading my words.
Read the Bible watch the Bible and then understand the Bible with studying the Bible.
I can give you some things to ponder though. Do you know the truth about these scenes? How did Samson die? How many times did Delilah ask him where his strength came from? Who cut Samson’s hair? How did Saul die? What happened to the messenger that told David that Saul was dead and why did it happen?
These are just a few of the many problems with just the second part of the series. I didn’t even touch on the first part of the series and there are three more parts yet to air. You can only imagine what they might do when they get around to telling the greatest story ever told. I recommend that if you do plan on watching the series, then do it with your Bible in your hand, turned to the relevant scripture so you can identify the variations.
What is even more disturbing, is that this series was reportedly created to better explain the Bible to their children without using a lot of the violence in the Bible. I can only hope that their children aren’t so easily lied to because they are changing the story. They are lying to their children with every variation.
If someone wants to make a Biblical movie or TV series about the Bible I think they should stick to the script that God wrote not their own. The whole idea of changing anything about what is in the Bible is prideful. To make a change is saying that you know a better way of telling the story than God. So we should all ask ourselves, what makes anyone smarter than God?
I’m not telling you not watch it. I am simply suggesting that you do it with a better knowledge of what you should be seeing so we won’t walk away with misconceptions that can affect your understanding of the Bible later.
