The Unemployment Lie

April 10, 2013

LieLieLieWhen are we going to stop letting our government lie to us? They repeatedly lie to us and we just set back and let them do it. We don’t even call them on their lies. The biggest lie that our government has perpetrated against us is how they count the number of unemployed people in America. This lie has gone on for decades. No politician wants bad unemployment numbers on their watch, so they avoid the truth with data manipulation. Decades ago they came up with a calculated method to manipulate the numbers so they don’t seem as bleat as they really are.

Decades ago some very sneaky dishonest politician figured out a way to manipulate the numbers in their favor and every politician since has gone along with the lie. They decided to narrow the requirements for those classified as unemployed, thus reducing the percentage. Thus making themselves look better because unemployment wasn’t so bad during their administration.

They narrowed the field by setting age requirements, length of time unemployed, and by not counting those who are underemployed. Underemployment is when you take a job, ANY job even if it is far below your level of ability and pay scale. A good example of underemployment is when an ex-CEO takes a position as a burger flipper at McDonalds. It is true that once he takes that job he is no longer unemployed, but he hasn’t recovered his true employment potential.

The age requirement I guess is understandable because the employment numbers should cover the normal workforce which excludes the very young and the very old. You don’t want to count children and you don’t want to count those who are unemployed because they retired from the workforce.

The real lie lies in the classification of the length of time one has been unemployed. You may ask, how can they say someone is no longer unemployed, just because they have been unemployed longer than others? The logic they use is that if you haven’t found a job in a certain time frame then you really don’t want to find a job. That logic may have been accurate twenty years ago, but not any more. It also may be true that many within the slums don’t care to find a job. I like to call those unemployed who are no longer counted as the “forgotten unemployed”. I would say that today the vast majority of the “forgotten unemployed” desperately want to find a job. That is why our government’s policy is unfair. If someone is unemployed, then they are unemployed, regardless of the reasons.

The government has said that if someone is unemployed for fifteen weeks or more, then they no longer count as unemployed. They use the figure of fifteen weeks because that is when the unemployment benefits run out. That is how they count the unemployed, by who is getting an unemployment check. Once they no longer receive a pay check of any kind, they no longer exist. At that point they need help more than ever, but instead the government treats them as forgotten and abandoned. They no longer count.

They have basically given up on them as a viable employee. Just because thereUnemployed is no job for them, that doesn’t mean they don’t want or deserve a job. I consider it unethical to just abandon the most desperate of the unemployed this way. That is exactly what they have done by dropping them off of the charts, or at least dropping them off the charts that count. They do this just so their “numbers” don’t look bad. No politician wants to be caught with double digit unemployment, during their time of service, because it has proven to be a death sentence to a politician’s career.

The government does however give out somewhat accurate numbers about unemployment, but you have to dig and calculate to come up with the true numbers. They categorize the workforce into six groups that they call U1-U6. If you take these numbers and add them appropriately, then you can get an accurate percentage of real unemployed Americans. If you wish to study the U1-U6 classifications then you can find the definitions of those six categories below. I’m not going to get into analyzing each group. I just want everyone to understand that what our government is telling us about unemployment is yet another lie.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics calculates six measures of unemployment, U1 through U6, that measure different aspects of unemployment.

  • U1: Percentage of labor force unemployed 15 weeks or longer.
  • U2: Percentage of labor force who lost jobs or completed temporary work.
  • U3: Official unemployment rate per the ILO definition occurs when people are without jobs and they have actively looked for work within the past four weeks.
  • U4: U3 + “discouraged workers“, or those who have stopped looking for work because current economic conditions make them believe that no work is available for them.
  • U5: U4 + other “marginally attached workers”, or “loosely attached workers”, or those who “would like” and are able to work, but have not looked for work recently.
  • U6: U5 + Part-time workers who want to work full-time, but cannot due to economic reasons (underemployment).

You can see that U3 is the “official unemployment rate” and that is the number we all hear in the news. It is the big lie being told to us about the unemployed. The real numbers are much scarier and we will never hear about them in the news media.

When you look at the numbers be sure to notice not just each individual number, but also look at the trend of the numbers through the past eight years. The trend reveals something else that the media won’t tell you. During the Bush years the figures were steadily going down, but when Obama took over our government, the numbers rapidly went up and stayed up two to three times higher than they were when he took office.

Just like the unemployment being too much for the government to put in one number, the statistics consists of too much data to put in one blog, so I have created a second blog which contains all the government stats for your inspection.
